An astounding number of Americans won’t get vaccinated.
The result is there are “roughly 4,000 deaths attributable to invasive pneumococcal disease and between 3,000 and 49,000 deaths due to seasonal influenza annually,” according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
White people generally are more likely to seek out vaccines.
The CDC estimates racial and ethnic minority adults have higher hospitalization rates due to influenza and lower vaccination coverage than non-Hispanic white adults.
This is a shame because vaccines have a proven record of keeping people safe, and at a cost the fraction of what a hospital stay would be.
Immunizations are a safe and cost-effective method to reduce illness. Despite the proven effectiveness of vaccination, adult immunization rates remain low in the United States.
Several causes are listed as inhibiting immunizations. They include:
• lack of insurance coverage
• some physicians don’t recommend vaccines
• poverty is a deterrent to getting shots
• Distrust of the medical system, especially by blacks.
However, statistics can vary. During Covid Hispanics and Asians in New York were more likely than whites or Blacks to get vaccinated.
